For my copywriting course, I was tasked with writing a 250-300 word press release promoting a product or service of my choice, using the techniques I’d covered in the lesson. I decided to focus my press release on an upcoming film called ‘Egghead & Twinkie’, which I’d seen during a preview screening.

'Little Miss Sunshine' meets 'Scott Pilgrim vs the World' in Sarah Kambe Holland’s Debut Comedy

Asian-American director Sarah Kambe Holland debut film Egghead & Twinkie has made a splash at recent festivals. What started as a short back in 2019 has quickly become a fan favourite, capturing the hearts of festivalgoers at the likes of BFI Flare in London and Cinequest Film Festival.

Adapted from a 2019 short of the same name, Egghead & Twinkie sees two best friends set off on a road trip across the US. After Twinkie confesses his feelings towards Egghead, she reveals a secret of her own, and the duo embark on a trip to meet her online crush. Along the way, they meet a host of quirky characters, and their friendship is put to the test.

The leads are played by newcomer Sabrina Jieaffa and Louis Tomeo (Every Witch Way). They're joined by J. Scott Browning and Kelley Mauro as Twinkie's parents, Ayden Lee as BD, and Asahi Hirano as Jess.

Sarah describes the film as "witty, fast-paced, heart-warming". It's a feel-good coming-of-age comedy with a non-linear narrative, sprinkled with flashbacks and animated sequences.

Sarah based the film on her personal experience as a queer Asian-American. Ahead of the film's release, she said "I came up with the idea for Egghead & Twinkie six years ago, shortly after coming out to my parents. Since then, the film has won over the hearts of thousands on TikTok, amassed an incredible cast and crew, and survived a global pandemic."

Egghead & Twinkie is a must-see for LGBTQIA+ audiences and anyone reminiscing about their awkward teen years.

Egghead & Twinkie will be available to stream on Amazon Prime from May 25th.
